about

The companion to Easley Blackwood's Twelve Microtonal Etudes for Electronic Music Media. My master's thesis project was an analysis of some of Blackwood's Etudes, which can be found on my website here:
www.stephenweigelcomposerperformer.com/xenharmonic-analysis

I also have the goal of creating keyboard arrangements of all of Easley Blackwood's Etudes (EB sadly passed away in 2023). Regarding the etudes, there has been a huge revival in interest recently, some examples of this include Matthew Sheeran's gorgeous "Acoustic Microtonal" album (orchestrations and re-tunings of EB's etudes to give them a human element), and Stephen Malinowski's MIDI renderings on YouTube. When Matthew was recording "Acoustic Microtonal," we collaborated for awhile to check sounds and he was also gracious enough to record one of my compositions, the 11 note Macrotonal Etude, in the same way! I plan to try recording the rest with acoustic instruments someday like this and also re-do the music in Dorico, since the accidentals would actually have playback instead of just being symbols.

Here are the credits for the 11 note recording that Matthew put together:
Composer - Stephen Weigel
Arranger - Matthew Sheeran

Performed by musicians from the Budapest Scoring Orchestra:
Flute/Piccolo - Anita Szabó
Oboe - Béla Horváth

Recording Engineer - Péter Barabas
Session Producer - Bálint Sapszon

Recorded in Budapest at Tom-Tom Studio A, December 18th 2021.
(Microtonally retuned using Melodyne)

Here are videos of the keyboard arrangements of Easley Blackwood's etudes that I have created so far.
